I have a special love for maps—old maps, new maps, and especially beautifully illustrated maps. I love the colors and the line quality, as well as the wonderful symbols and seafaring lore that adorn some of the older designs. Maps have been the inspiration for several of my mural projects (and upcoming pillow designs for 2014!), so you can understand why I snapped up this incredible map book as soon as I saw it at the bookstore!
The colors and illustrations in Maps are absolutely gorgeous! Every page is packed with information about each country–from typical topography and borders, to traditional costumes, food, famous artists and scholars, and iconic architecture and landmarks!
My boys and I are going to be digging into this book for years to come, and I just know it will be a fun resource for homework assignments!
Maps and international traditions are very important sources of inspiration for me at Cheeky Monkey Home. This book reminds me of an amazing mural project I had several years ago, where one of my most creative and talented clients and I collaborated to create a world map mural for her son’s nursery. She provided a list of landmarks and historic points to be included, that would be an ongoing source for curiosity and learning to surround her little boy!
Here you can see the Taj Mahal, the Silk Road in China, a Buddha and a Japanese pagoda. And below–the Eiffel Tower, Roman Coliseum, Statue of Liberty, and endless other fun points of interest and significance!
I have several more very special map inspirations to share with you, so please check back over the next few weeks to see more! In the mean time, you can buy Maps, by Aleksandra Mizielinska and Daniel Mizielinski here!
