Tried & True  DIY Sideboard with Metallic Spray Paint Accents

Hello, and Happy Spring!  During spring cleaning I visited some of the treasures in my basement–diamonds in the rough that just need a little TLC to have a new life. Today my grandparents’ cabinets are coming upstairs for some new paint and sparkle!

Well, OK, maybe you can see how my husband might want these out on the curb…

I had fun using metallic brass spray paint on the wooden pulls.  This piece is very basic, but well made, and a touch of glitz is a great way to accentuate the interesting square door pulls.  I did some sanding and patching with wood putty first, and then I taped off and covered the areas I did not want to be spray painted so it would not go all over the surface.  I used three coats of spray paint to get nice even coverage.  Next, I used a high gloss latex to paint the rest of the cabinets.

There are so many great examples of metallics used on furniture right now.  It is really easy and dries quickly. You will find gorgeous finishes of copper, golds, nickel, pewter, silver and brass at most any hardware store.  These elegant baskets below are from Martha Stewart Living—so lovely!

Both of these elegant pieces are for sale at Hayleon Vintage on Etsy, along with many other great metallic inspiration.

It feels so great to give new life to an old piece and put it to use once again.  Stay tuned as more of my basement treasures come to life soon!  Happy Spring!
